" The album "If I Only I Had Light"
is a collection of Terry Rice's favorite/greatest songs.
The moods change from sad and depressing as on "The Sky is Red," to very punkish and fast as on the industrial remix of "If I Had Religion," and even a bit of folk in "Love Ya Babe."
When first listening, one cannot help but notice is the poor sound quality. This could be taken as a inability to record properly, but I find it forces the listener to concentrate not on the great production quality but rather the message in the lyrics.
I feel there is something special about the music of Terry Rice, and it's not his skills as a musician. It's his ability to express himself in a very pure and untainted way and this is where his appeal lies for me.
Musically, Terry has combined elements of old country with goth and punk to create his own unique style. In my opinion, the album's centerpiece is the acoustic version of "If I Had Religion." The punkish "Psychotic Mix" and also Gonad's cover of the song are fun to listen to because the music is more in an rock/industrial vein, but I feel the acoustic version perfectly matches the lyrics.
Other highlights on the album include Terry's excellent cover of the Ben Hunter song "Love Ya Babe," the self deprecating "Failure," and the obvious caring displayed on "Secrets" and "Little Sister," to name a few.
Actually, the whole album is very enjoyable and worth checking out.
Do yourself a favor and download it, you will not regret it.
